Unseasonable Visitor

He shakes crystals from his silver hair
hangs his long coat in the black hall

frost prints follow
his metal boots
across the floor

and without so much
as a by your leave
he stands before
the cold ashes
still not swept
from the hearth

he takes the frozen clock
down from the mantelpiece

shivers the icy hands forward
one silent hour.
