The January Tree


Inverted witch brooms.
Knotty handles
planted in iron:
candles flower,
glowing blooms
in vaporous air, where
birds black as bats
stir, circle and swirl, specks
that vanish like bubbles
surfacing in cauldrons.

    something about the closeness of the simile gives the image a density.
